Sorry I know this is years later but so much rubbish is talked about Boot Camp and external Windows on a Mac.
Really, if Apple support multiple internal hard drives in the past, and they allow one to use an external Hard drive as the start-up disk for Mac OS X, then it would be much more helpful if Boot Camp / Mac OS X could recognise a Boot Camp install on an external HD when you boot up. And if I had purchased the default 256 SSD internal drive, I would be aghast at basically having to allocate half of it to Windows. even so, I am disappointed at having to use up about 10% of it just to install Windows. In my case, I was lucky to buy the 1TB internal SSD option for R2-D2. (b) use up scarce, super fast and super expensive internal SSD capacity to allocate to running boring old Windows (which I will hardly ever run. (a) partition it (which I understand Boot Camp does without having to wipe the drive and/or its contents), and
and since the new R2-D2 Mac Pro only has one of those, we have to: Apparently, Boot Camp *HAS* to be installed on an INTERNAL hard drive. but I now see that this is apparently not possible. I was planning to buy an external hard drive (such as the Lacie Porsche Slim 120G SSD) to run Windows via Boot Camp. This was nice and clean, keeping everything separate. My previous big SILVER Mac Pro had 3 internal hard drives, so I assigned one of them to Boot Camp / Windows, and I could run Windows whenever I wanted to. I don't use Windows often, but I occasionally need it for testing purposes and screen grabs etc for documentation. This program is compatible only with Mac computers that use Intel processors. This is a very interesting and very relevant thread.
